Did you just move to a new city? Start a new job? Have you recently lost a loved one? Or maybe you’ve experienced the loss of a dream.
No one can escape change. It’s a part of life. Sometimes it’s a good change and sometimes it’s shocking. Regardless of whether a change is good or bad, you still have a choice. You can either go with the flow or let it punch you in the gut while you try to stay upright.
It’s easy to go with the flow when a storm comes your way. All you have to do is get back in bed and hide under the covers till it passes, hoping there is some shred of your life that is still recognizable. Will that certainly takes less effort, it also disempowers you and keeps you from taking back control over your life.
The secret to handling the turbulent waters of change is to focus on progress. If you can make progress on a regular basis, then you feel great. You might be thinking, “that’s easy for you to say, Amy.” However, when your stuck and don’t know where to turn because you’re in an emotional fog, it’s hard to even make sense of what’s really happening. So there isn’t a clear cut way to move forward either. By using the following 6 strategies, you can bring a sense of structure and certainty to an otherwise chaotic time and start building something better.
Strategy #1: Create a Vision
Create a vision for what you truly want. If you recently got a divorce, what does your ideal life look like? What traits do you want in your next partner? If you recently became unemployed, what does your ideal career look like.
The picture must excite you. It needs to be captivating. It has to magnetize you to it. It shouldn’t be something that you have to struggle to appreciate, it should be something that you desire more than anything else so that it illuminates your emotions. Visualize the goal, notice how it makes you feel and then do it.
Strategy # 2: Make the Resolution
Now it’s time to commit. You’re not going to just sit there hoping everything will turn out for the best. Take control and cut off any other possibility. Make the commitment of “Okay, I am not going to just sit here and hope everything will be okay. I am going to take control of this situation.” Cut off any other possibility. Affirm that you will find a way to make it happen and shift your mindset towards achieving this awesome vision.
Strategy #3: Know Why You Want This Goal
Now that you know what you want, why do you want it? This is a very powerful part to making progress because without it, you’ll lose your emotional drive. You will inevitably have hurdles along the way, but your reasons help you keep going. When the pressures turn on, your reasons keep you moving and override the fear and negativity.
Stategy #4: Work Toward it Every Single Day
See if you can remember something you wanted so badly you could almost taste it. You had a deep emotional need for it. You thought about it every single day. You didn’t necessarily even know how to get it, but somehow, you attracted the right person or the right situation and it just came together.
Why did that happen? Is it the Law of Attraction? Maybe, in part.
There’s a part of your brain called the reticular activating system (RAS). It determines what you perceive. When you know what you want, become very clear on it, and have strong enough reasons for it, you trigger the RAS. Your brain then searches for things that could help you move forward.
Strategy #5: Raise Your Standards
Ultimately, if you want to create real change in your life, you have to raise your standards.
How old were you when you began to come up with what you could or couldn’t do? You can look at any area in your life where you have set limits. Use one and ask yourself when you decided to accept that. For many people, these self-imposed limitations prevent them from moving forward or asking for help. Have you convinced yourself that where you are in life is what you deserve? Wherever people have their identity attached to, they live.
If you want to create a new life for yourself, or even just improve one area of your life, you have to raise your standards. You have to let go of limiting beliefs that imprison you. It’s not something that will happen overnight, but with consistency and coaching, new behaviors and thoughts will become more powerful and move you to where you want to be.
Strategy #6: Create and Use Routines
Routines are things you doo each day and eventually build up making reaching your goal easier. They don’t have to be elaborate or many hours long. Even small routines are valuable. What are some little things that you could do each day to help create a clear path toward your vision?
Sometimes changes seem gigantic to our psyche. If it looks overwhelming, break it down into baby steps. Condition your body and emotions with smaller routines. Maybe that means going for a walk or lifting weights for 15 minutes each morning. Maybe it’s incorporating affirmations each day as you commute to work in the morning. It could even be giving a stranger a compliment each day or each week.
Remember, creating the life you really want doesn’t happen overnight. It putting the above six strategies into motion. Change of any kind – good or bad – does not have to define us.
